When the great plague reached London is 1665-66 it killed an estimated 100,000 people. King Charles II of England decided to leave the city and moved on to safer pastures. The poor were left to fend for themselves, increasingly alarmed by the contagion it was inevitable that some would attempt to escape the confines of the city. The King stationed guards at the major exits of the city and prevented a mass exodus of the city. For a short time people were allowed to escape if they possessed a bill of good health but this document was hard to come by as the contagion started to take hold. The people of London were forced back to their homes to live with the effects of the plague.
